Figure 2. Changes in BT performance in the pre, post and immediate retention test across groups. All groups (A, B, C, D) significantly (indicated by *) increased their performance from the preto the post-test in the trained as well as in the untrained hand. After the AT, groups A (AT for 6 minutes) and B (AT for 12 minutes) showed a significant reduction in BT performance in the immediate retention test of the trained hand. However, only group B showed a significant reduction in BT performance in the immediate retention test in the untrained hand. The box at the bottom shows the increase in BT performance over the training period for groups A, B, C, D. doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0081038.g002

Cross-Limb Interference during Motor Learning
It is well known that following skill learning, improvements in motor performance may transfer to the untrained contralateral limb. It is also well known that retention of a newly learned task A can be degraded when learning a competing task B that takes place directly after learning A. Here we investigate if this interference effect can also be observed in the limb contralateral to the trained...

Motor skill learning is one of the key components of motor function recovery after stroke, especially recovery driven by neurorehabilitation. Transcranial direct current stimulation can enhance neurorehabilitation and motor skill learning in stroke patients. However, the neural mechanisms underlying the retention of stimulation-enhanced motor skill learning involving a paretic upper limb have n...
متن کاملMotor learning and cross-limb transfer rely upon distinct neural adaptation processes.
Performance benefits conferred in the untrained limb after unilateral motor practice are termed cross-limb transfer. Although the effect is robust, the neural mechanisms remain incompletely understood. In this study we used noninvasive brain stimulation to reveal that the neural adaptations that mediate motor learning in the trained limb are distinct from those that underlie cross-limb transfer...
متن کاملProactive Interference as a Result of Persisting Neural Representations of Previously Learned Motor Skills in Primary Motor Cortex
Learning to control movements in different dynamic environments is marked by proactive interference; learning a first skill interferes with the subsequent learning of a second one. The neural basis of this effect is poorly understood. We tested the idea that proactive interference results from persisting neural representations of previously learned skills in the primary motor cortex (M1). We us...
متن کاملThe Effect of Contextual Interference on Acquisition and Learning Badminton Skills among Children aged from 10 to 12
Age may limit the effect of contextual interference, but the accurate effect of age on contextual interference is not completely identified. Therefore, the purpose of the study was the effect of contextual interference practice orders on acquisition and learning of badminton skills of 45 female students aged from 10 to 12. Participants were randomly assigned to one of the three groups of bloc...
